Dental implants are a long lasting, strong and secure way to replace a missing tooth or even multiple teeth. They are a highly advanced dental restoration, using modern and innovative materials to create a fixed new tooth root.
The implant consists of a strong titanium post, which is planted into your jaw to provide strong support for a highly aesthetic crown, which blends beautifully into your smile. Titanium is very well tolerated by the human body, and fuses to the surrounding jawbone to create a solid and long lasting foundation.
We begin by making sure you are a suitable candidate for implant treatment. Once this is established, we take digital scans and images of your teeth to ensure a high level of accuracy and precision. We also check if you need any preparatory treatment, such as a bone graft.
The titanium implant is placed carefully into your jaw, using local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort. It takes around 3-6 months for your implant to heal and fuse to your bone, so we fit a temporary tooth to protect your gum and maintain your smile.
When your implant has healed, we fit your final crown. It’s always our favourite part of treatment when we see you delighted with your completed smile!

No, dental implant treatment does not hurt. We always use local anaesthetic for any oral surgery, placing of implants included. The area in your mouth is completely numb during the procedure. If you are nervous about your implant treatment, we can arrange for sedation so you feel completely at ease. After your implant surgery, you may feel some discomfort as the gum and bone heal. Painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can be used, and the pain should fade after a few days.
The whole process from your initial appointment to your final new smile can take several weeks or sometimes months. The implant placement procedure itself takes around 60-90 minutes, but time is then needed for the implant to heal and fuse to your bone. In some cases, immediate implants can be considered. These take less time as these are placed at the same time as the tooth is removed, but have negatives too. We can discuss this with you.
If you don’t have enough bone for an implant placement, there are ways we can help. Bone loss is particularly common for patients who have worn dentures for a long period of time and the bone has naturally been dissolved from the absence of teeth in the jaw. We can replenish the lost bone and rebuild it using a number of different grafting procedures.
Yes, it is important to keep up with your regular appointments and routine dental care. The healthier your teeth and gums are, the faster you’ll recover without any issues. It’s crucial to keep your healing implant safe from bacteria so it has the best chance of being strong and successful.
