What are crowns?

Crowns are used to give strength and protection to teeth that are chipped, cracked or badly decayed. They are a highly aesthetic cover that encases the weak, damaged and unsightly tooth underneath, providing robust protection. They can also be used to improve texture and colour to transform the appearance of your smile.

At One Two Three Dental, we can offer all-ceramic crowns, chosen for their superior cosmetic qualities and durability. They are able to revamp both front and back teeth and should remain problem-free for many years.

Crowns are fixed, long lasting and comfortable. Our expert dentists design and construct the custom made crown just for you to fit perfectly and look completely natural and beautiful.

There are several benefits of having a crown placed, including:

  • Repair to the broken down tooth itself
  • Prevention of fracture, pain and tooth loss
  • Greater support when chewing and in function
  • Reducing the load on your other teeth.

What does the treatment involve?

During your first appointment, we prepare your tooth for the crown. We remove any decay and create a healthy and solid foundation.

We take impressions or digital scans of your teeth, and discuss the shade of the final crown so it can be made to look as natural as possible. The crown is then custom made by hand by a lab technician. We fit a temporary crown to protect your tooth between your appointments.

When your crown is ready, we check the fit is accurate and comfortable, and that you are completely happy, before fixing it securely into place.

FAQs

How do I care for my crown?

Naturally, it is important to keep up with a good oral hygiene routine at home and ensure you attend regular check up appointments with your dentist. Other than this, there is no need for any additional care for your crown(s). They are robust and long lasting.

How long do crowns last?

As discussed, crowns are a fantastic option when restoring damaged teeth and typically, crowns last for 10 years+ and often much longer. Naturally, there are various factors that can affect this including a patient’s oral hygiene regime, dietary habits & unnatural biting forces.

Do dental crowns become stained?

Crowns do not stain. They are highly glazed and polished to prevent this.

Why do I need a crown not a filling?

Crowns are used to treat teeth that are more severely decayed or damaged, and beyond the point where a filling would be effective. They are much stronger and more likely to last longer. In some cases, a crown will need to be used if a tooth has been filled too many times and has become too weak. Without a crown, it will continue to fracture and possibly lead to pain and tooth loss.

What materials can be used for my crown?

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramics, metal and resin. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are the most popular due to their aesthetic qualities, with modern materials also offering improved strength. Gold crowns are strong and able to easily withstand chewing and biting actions, but are more noticeable in the mouth.

Can crowns be repaired?

Small cracks and chips in a crown can be repaired, but your dentist may choose to completely remove and replace it, depending on the damage present. We will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

What will my crown look like?

Crowns are very aesthetic and beautifully natural looking. They are very hard to detect once fitted in the mouth and blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Porcelain and ceramic give the best aesthetics and a natural appearance.
